The Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958 and is 1,093 feet tall - taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris on which it is based.
Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the world's most populous city. There are over 37 million people in Tokyo which, according to the 2012 census included the population within the recognized metro area of Tokyo and people living in the immediate surrounding area outside of the established border of Tokyo (the immediate suburbs). By comparison New York has over 20 million people and is ranked eighth in terms of size by population.
Prior to 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo. Large parts of Tokyo were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and in the World War II air raids of 1945. In 2013 Tokyo was named the world's most expensive city and the world's most livable city. We found it to be quite safe. It was not unusual to see children walking the streets alone late at night. Two people with us lost their computers - one in a taxi and the other at a hotel. Both were returned to the owners the same day they were lost.
