Here is a view showing the old grain elevator and the Santa Fe depot. The depot is still standing.
Florence was on the Santa Fe double track main line that ran between Emporia and Newton, Kansas. There was a branch line that ran from Florence to Ellinwood. No one is taking care of this depot. Rumor is that the BNSF still has ownership of it. I does need some work. Peabody is the next town west of Florence. It had a brick depot, too. It has been torn down.
Notice the railroad signal on the right side. We called this a "High Green" when I worked on the Santa Fe. My shooting partner walked down to the old grain elevator. I stayed around the depot, as I wanted a shot of a train passing by the elevator and depot. Of course, thing never go the way that you want. After the sun set, the train finally arrived.
Another tidbit, there is a company called Athearn. They produce HO scale engines and car. They have produced some building. A few years ago, Athearn produced a grain elevator. They used plans for from this elevator. A very small elevator, but widely known, around model railroading circle.
