Scarface

Ursus arctos

Scarface is a very famous grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park. He is probably in his mid-twenties and has been collared numerous times over the years. He has huge scars on his head and both ears appear to be "broken" from battling other bears. To me he looks thin in these photos compared to photos I have seen of him over the last couple of years.
We came across Scarface at Dunraven Pass near Mt. Washburn. He was gobbling up huge mouthfuls of grass right next to the road. In his prime he must have been an immense bear but you can tell he has seen better days. Still, he is very impressive and we were happy to be in the safety of our car. You can Google Scarface and find dozens of photographs taken of him over the years. He is quite the celebrity. This was the second time we have seen Scarface, the first time being in 2008 along Tower Road. I am not sure how old grizzlies live to be but my guess is that they don't often reach the age that Scarface has reached.

Great story and photo, Ann. I guess it's all about the teeth, just like elephants, how long they can survive?

I've certainly heard of Scarface. You are right, he is famous beyond the boundaries of Yellowstone. This is an incredible shot of him, and quite endearing. An old warrior. I would guess he is in real old age now. What a treat to see him (twice!). V
