1950's - matchbook cover from the popular Majorette Hamburgers on N. W. 79th Street, Miami

511 N. W. 79th Street, Miami, Florida view map

Thank you to Ellie Wheeler for contributing this great old image of a matchbook cover from Majorette Hamburgers, a popular drive-in restaurant on NW 79th Street in Miami in the 1950's.

Ellie says: "I also loved the Majorette and my sister and I went there often in the summer of 1956. I still remember "Heaven On Earth" by the Platters was A-4 on the jukebox."

Note the 6-digit telephone number which indicates the age of the matchbook cover to be prior to 1957/1958 when telephone numbers were converted to 2-letter prefixes (PL=PLaza, FR=FRanklin, etc.) plus 5 digits to make telephone numbers 7 digits. The 2-letter prefixes were abolished when area codes were implemented in South Florida in the early 1960's under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).

Thanks to David Glantz, grandson of Albert and Fay Glantz, owners of the Majorette, I now have a photo of the drive-in displayed in this gallery, specifically at http://www.pbase.com/donboyd/image/158264003 .

Hey guys, my name is David Glantz. My Grandparents were the owners of the Majorette; Albert & Fay Glantz. Their son, Marshall Glantz (my Father) is the one who was with Carnival Fruit Co. years back. Albert & Fay had three children; Esther, Marshall & Owen.
I have a pic of the Majorette if you'd like. -David

A friend of mine, Steve Wachholder, is a relative of the original owner who was a former cantor. It is his son (if I'm not mistaken) who started Carnival Fruit Shippers (originally at 6th Street and Meridian Avenue on Miami Beach).

Years ago, Steve and I took a ride down to the old building so he could snap some 'now' photos. We never found an image of 'then', sad to say.

Eileen, me too, and I'm dying to come across a photo of the drive-in so I can post it here on this site.
