Cigar Factory, New Orleans, Louisiana, 2012

While exploring New Orleans on my own, I stumbled across a small cigar factory doing business along Decatur Street. The aromatic smell of the place recalled a bygone era when New Orleans cigar manufacturers could import tobacco directly from Cuba. This factory still manages to obtain enough fine tobacco to turn out 30,000 had-rolled cigars a year. As a photographer, I always try to stress the human values inherent in my subject matter. In this case, "less becomes more" as I emphasize the craft and care that goes into making a cigar. It is the language of the fingers that carries the point home. The fresh leaves and the completed cigars on the top and bottom of the right hand side of the frame supply the context we need to appreciate the workmanship.

Thanks, Jude, for responding to the composition of this image. I try to make everything in a picture contribute to its meaning. A good test of any potential composition is to ask yourself if anything in the frame is irrelevant to the message, and then change the framing to eliminate it, if possible.

This is such a gorgeous composition. I like how the image is broken into quadrants and each 1/4 holds a vital piece to the story.

Yes, the color is largely due to the nature of the Fuji X10 camera, not to mention the subject matter itself. I love its palette, and am certainly glad I had it with me in this place. It was very dark, with task lighting. Its fast f/2.0 lens came in handy here.

This is processed like a painting - I love the warm color. Looks like you're doing well with the X10.

I was thinking of our sojourn in Cuba when I made this shot, Iris. I saw the hands at work first, then noticed the power of the exploding scratches on the cutting board, as well as the supplementary context provided by the raw tobacco leaves and the finished cigars.

What a wonderful image......the light and composition are stunning. Your image dignifies the art of cigar making (something we also saw in Cuba).
