Ile Sainte-Marguerite is named after Honorat's sister ( Honorat gave his name to the other one of the The Lerins Islands), also pious and devoted to her faith. The island is a restful refuge, offering a choice of many criss-crossing scenic paths.
From the port, it's only a short walk to Fort Royal, built in a location that has seen fortifications since Roman times. The star-shaped building there now was built in the 1600s by order of Cardinal Richelieu; its most famous prisoner was the 17th century Man in the Iron Mask, whose identity is still unknown after all these years.
