S - 18 Swimming 1961.jpg

To answer your question, at one time a diving tower existed at Hanging Rock Lake. As the website states it was originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was completed in the first half of 1939 while the bathhouse was still under construction and the lake was still being filled. In the photos I’ve attached you can see that there were two levels to the structure, each with one diving board. Over the years the tower was repaired and parts were replaced many times. On at least one occasion the entire wood structure was rebuilt. The exact date of when the tower portion was removed is unknown. It was referred to in park reports as the diving “tower” as late as the mid-1970s. First reference to diving “platform” (which it is now called) was in 1979. It’s unknown if the metal frame of the platform is original, but if not, it most likely rests on the original pilings placed by the CCC over 70 years ago. If you have any further questions feel free to email me directly.

Sincerely,
