Notice from Pearl : the KHS reunion meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 11/30 has been canceled.
Will post the new meeting date (probably after the holidays) as soon as I hear about it.

Vernon Wong, who is currently living in Europe, sent Pearl a donated item for the use of KHS '60.
Excerpts from his letter below:

" Enclosed you'll find a knot-board I put together for the KHS-60 association.
It's been years since I did any knotting-splicing-sennit making, so I had to use a lot of recall from my old sailing days... ...
Carl: The coins are for your collection...
As you can see, I haven't been on a crusade for rare and exotic coins for you -- Sorry... "

I had hoped to get a picture of that knot-board at the meeting... next time, next meeting.
Gerri... me ?... serious face ? ...need to practice in front of my mirror.
Hope you and everyon else had a great Thanksgiving too.

As I informed Rita in my email reply, I don't have Brenda's (or Bob's) phone numbers.
I did give her Brenda's email address as a link to it is prominently displayed on her website... but I also
mentioned that they would be on their honeymoon cruise (hey how many of you 69-70 year olds can say
the same thing) until the end of this month and wasn't sure if she'd be reading her emails even after that
for a while... well... it is their honeymoon after all.

Glad to hear it arrived.
Only thing that causes me slight worry, now that I think about it, is that the board is from my dry, cool climate,
whereas Hawaii is warm and a little humid.
The wood is cured, but there still may be some effect, ie, expansion, which may or may not be good.
I don´t know much about wood.
Let´s hope it stays as is.
Stay in touch, all the best, much Aloha - Vern

Elsie, I'll make an assumption and pass on a thanks to you from Carol Chock Tom and Doug for sharing
his story with others as I'm sure that's what they wanted and intended, especially for Doug who is such
an inspiration whether one agrees with his beliefs and convictions or not.

June, although I didn't witness the ceremony ( waited outside to avoid being a distraction walking in to
the chapel late ), I did try to listen to what I could hear of it... wouldn't be surprised if it actually started
11 minutes after 11AM... fairy tales are li' dat you know.

Well... OK Gerri, so I didn't go off to work, but I did just arrive from work... and probably looking grungy
and sweaty too, I would imagine ( thanks for the hello and hug by the way ).
I did tell Brenda that I had to get back to work and also was an 'uninvited' attendee, so I couldn't accept
her generous offer to join all of you.
What I meant to say to Brenda was 'unexpected' attendee, not having RSVP'd, since I wasn't sure I'd be
able to be there that day.
I also arrived bearing nothing except my camera... one of the Three Wise Men I was not.
Brenda thanked me for 'everything'... what 'everything' was and why I'm not sure... if part of 'everything'
was re: Bob, I look at it more like I just happened to leave open the correct door and Brenda's Prince
Charming managed to find it and strode through of his own accord to claim his bride.
( Dang... should have been a fairy tale writer... Nuk, you like collaborate... you can do all of the color
commentary while I do the off-color stuff... make that non-color stuff ).

Pearl, it probably still feels fairy-tale-like for Bob and Brenda... and to the rest of us following the story.
Hey yeah... a get-together... great idea Pearl... I know this end of year will be too short with the holidays
and all, but there'll be lots of time and opportunity next year before the April reunion.

Carol, although it took nearly 51-1/2 years since high school, looking up at them on the stage posing for
pictures, they had almost the look and radiant aura of a happy couple marrying right out of college.

Hi All….I’m still here quietly reading the blogs and trying to keep up with all the emails.
Doug’s story was absolutely touching!!
I have never known anyone as brave and having such a true belief and faith in the Lord.
Only this faith has given him the strength to endure the difficulties he has faced and still able to maintain
such a positive and up-beat attitude.
I printed his story to share with a few people I know who may appreciate reading about this person with
such an inspiring spirit.

Congratulations to Robert and Brenda, who managed to tie the knot!
We all knew that marriage was in the makings, but I didn’t know that a date had been set…and what an
appropriate date that we will all remember.
Thank you Hal for sharing the wedding photos of the lovely couple.
Brenda, you looked stunning and both looked so very happy.

Love, Elsie

Wishing you much love and happiness and a wonderful life together.
What a great day for a wedding … 11 AM on 11-11-11!
And Hal, thank you for going down to the church to take those beautiful pictures.
It gives the rest of us who couldn’t be there a chance to share in their happiness.

Also, thank you for sharing Doug’s story.
He is truly an amazing and inspiring person!

Warmest aloha dear 60's KHS friends etal and a colossal warm congratulations to newlyweds, Robert and
Brenda Gore whose delightful wedding vows and receiption was held on Veterans Day, 11/11/11, can't
get a more remarkable once in a lifetime date for the Gores' special day.
Brenda , gorgeous, radiant and giddy throughout with handsome Robert beaming like we never saw this
side of him and so happy and proud in his elegant white suit.
Enchanting garden setting, the charming intimate Kapahulu Unity chapel set off Monsarrat and Kanaina
Aves. amazingly just short blocks away from the hectic Waikiki action having Oahu thoroughly entranced
with the 21 world leaders attending the serious APEC events hosted by Pres. Obama on a classic beautiful
breezy sunny Hawaiian day.
What an honor for the Hawaiian Islands who never had such homage and exposure to the world about our
unique cosmopolitan and sophisticated international city,( my opinion).
An alfresco delicious lunch catered by Buzz's Steak house family in Kailua was feasted on by the Gore's friends,
among our classmates attending besides Harold Oshiro who always is at the right place at the right time
(always runs off pleading work is calling. yeah right, you are so smooth) was Sheila Espindola Fernandez,
Carol Andrade Gouveia, Bobbie Baptist Hanoa and husband, Beverly Davis Espirito (may have missed someone).
Although not on the program got Brenda to do an adorable impromptu"Waikiki"hula with her friend, a Cazimero
relative strumming the guitar with Robert seated front center just beaming at Brenda.
Robert's best man from Seattle did a splendid job describing his best friend to the T and how Robert, an excellent
physician based on years working together, has been floating, not walking, on Cloud 9....Wow, just like when we
experienced such uncontrolled emotional moments throughout our intermediate and high school years.
We did not yet know about raging testosterones and stuff like that, so deliciously innocent we were then.
After the dance, Cazimero sang out old 50's songs, fabulous, what memories.
Of course, Brenda's favorite "Puppy Love" by Paul Anka was the biggest hit especially the "help me, help me" part....
hilarious, no one could leave until we all sang this oldie with the classmates on stage singing together while
Robert and Brenda danced, also Dream, Still of the night, Eddie My Love, White Carnation etc. the memories are
not that bright at this point.
I was amazed that he knew the words but then found out that he was 69years old and his wife said that he was from
Kohala on the big Island and, of course there was not much to do but sing these songs, such fun.
Excellent how everything just fell in place at this special , special moment for the Gores who planned to leave that
evening on a romantic cruise.
A fantastic and blessed memorable day for all.
Jack and I have been fighting a terrible cold and had to leave,
Keep well dear friends and do keep family and friends always close, will be in touch.
Aloha pumehana, Gerri and Jack Digmon

There were some email messages going around a couple of days ago, inquiring on an obit column in the
local paper that listed a Thomas Okuhara.
Be assured that it is not our classmate... believe it refers to his older cousin, a KHS '58 grad.
A great loss for that Thomas Okuhara's family and for those who knew him.

Very small world indeed Pamela.
We look forward to possibly seeing you again in January.

Dropped by Unity Church - Diamond Head for a few minutes, paparazzi style, to catch a glimpse and take
a couple of shots of a very happy-looking couple... Brenda Ignacio and Robert Gore.
They had their wedding ceremony on 11-11-11 around 11AM with a reception after at that church. then
off to their South Pacific honeymoon cruise that evening.
Brenda had emailed me a few months ago with a blanket invitation to any of the classmates who might
have wanted to join them in this event.
Realizing the size (small) and location (residential) of the venue, I cautioned her on a 'blanket' invite as I
knew there was a large number of classmates following their unique story who'd possibly show up.
Cost, planning and logistics were of course other factors to consider that, understandably in her great
excitement over the upcoming event, she may have overlooked... she did say later too though that she
did think, quite modestly I thought, that maybe just a few might attend.
But I did spot maybe a handful of our classmates, attending the ceremony, who probably somehow found
out where and when the wedding would take place.
I also told Brenda, the other classmates and friends could help them celebrate at a later time and place at
an informal get-together or whatevah... so, another really good excuse to have one.
May have taken 50 years to finally happen, but Bob and Brenda now have the rest of their lives and eternity
to make it up.

Hi Hal,

Thank you so much for sharing Doug's story online.
His pastor is one of my pastors in Hawaii too.
Warren talked of Doug but I just didn't put the two together.
What a small world.
I'll be able to tell Warren when I'm in Hawaii in January and also to Doug when I go to visit him.
Thanks again. Take care.

Love, Pam

Chester is passing on this request to vote for Kanani.
Don't normally wander from the blog's emphasis on memories and reunions, but then a lot of you went to
or are fans of UH.
The site is legit and LOWES is a primary sponsor.
If you're not familiar with Kanani and her background, below is a link to a news story on her.

And then there's Doug's story... shared with us by Carol Chock Tom.
Mahalo Carol, for your kindness and thoughfulness to Doug and your classmates in doing so.
Again, don't/won't normally go into any posts with a political/religious bent to it... and in this case it has one,
and greatly so... but I do feel Doug's story to be so compelling an insight that it should be shared.
Besides it's content, which may be contrary to some of you, it's much too long to post here.
I've posted it on the Google Docs site, much like the recent 'reunion survey' we had.

Recognizing all the Vets out there... mahalo for all you've done.
Have a great Veteran's Day.

Aloha Hal,
Just got sent this from Doug, and those who helped him write it.
It is 15 pgs. long but done in large print and fascinating.
Could you send it to anyone who wants to read it?
He has lived an exciting, full life in spite of being bed-ridden - probably more than some of us!

Great to hear that you'll be there in Vegas, Velma.
I know Bing (Betty) won't be able to make it to LV then and she may not be available in D.C. at that time also.
But hopefully there'll be another 'mini-reunion'... D.C. style.

Thanks for writing in Carol, despite your busy schedule/life.
It seemed, for all of us when younger, that life would become so much slower and simpler at this age.
What were we thinking.

As I mentioned earlier, I would be tagging along with my wife to her KHS '61 50th class reunion.
Then I would try to get a snapshot of Mrs. Lorraine Chang, their senior class english teacher and advisor...
as she was for us also during our high school senior year.
Following is the link to that snapshot and other KHS '61 50th reunion pictures.

If you remember her you'll probably have, like me, a reaction similar to the KHS '61 50th reunion M.C., Ed Awakuni,
who commented as he introduced her as a special guest " so you must have been, what, 18 or 19 back then, right ?".
Not only appearing 20 years younger than expected, but she appeared as mobile as one 20 years younger.

Dear Hal and all of our classmates. Mahalo Nui Loa for the info that you provide.
This is Aloha Kekipi, and I am very grateful for all of your sharing.
I am happy and relieved that the Vegas gathering has been set for 10/13.
I had told Jean Nakamura that I have a Hawaiian Civic Club Convention in Oct. and I was hoping that they would not be
held at the same time.
Well, it seems that everything is timed perfectly.
I will be attending the Vegas activities and then fly to D.C. for the 10/14 opening of my convention.
I hope that Betty and I and whoever is in the DC area can get together.

Thanks for your reply and info on Doug.
It's been rather hectic at my reason for this delayed response!
Appreciate that you did include my email re: Doug and I understand about not wanting to publish anything controversial.
Just wanted to let the others know what happened to him and why he is able to handle his condition so well.

Thanks again for continuing to update us classmates; I know it takes a lot of time and I (we) appreciate it!

Abu, if you want to write to him, send it care of the Convalescent Center of Honolulu, 1900 Bachelot St.
Honolulu, HI 96817 (directly mauka of Kuakini Hospital and just Ewa of Rehab of the Pacific).
If visiting, he's in room 107 in the first bed of a 3-bed shared space... visiting hours seem pretty flexible
there as I was told by staff that I could drop by any reasonable time but would suggest somewhere
between 9AM to noon and maybe 1PM to early evening... check with staff or the room first to see if
he is being attended to for his personal needs at the moment... if so, there is a very comfortable
waiting area with TV by the lobby... it usually takes only 15 or 20 minutes for staff to attend to him...
there is free parking on-site under the building while visiting.

Tremaine, I also remember you, Doug and a whole bunch of others besides myself from the Koko Head
(now Hawaii Kai) area while riding the bus to and from school.

Pearl, just 'reporting' on what I hear... or am able to anyhow these days, what with the tinnitis and all.

Roy, what (some of) the classmates are doing here on the 'blog' is pretty close to your 'life story' idea
but would be great to expand on it with, as you said, all the fascinating and interesting experiences
of our classmates... a lot of us do have more time than... whatevah.

Nice talking to you too Velma... did already have your email address but stopped sending the 'blog' to
you a long while back since they kept 'bouncing back' because of a full 'inbox'.
Anyway, you're back on the list and should be receiving the 'blog' again (hear Jean yelling "Hooray!")

Bing, I guess Roy answered your question on Doug's writings... he is unable to do the tasks that we all
too often take for granted and needs to have staff or friends do them for him.
