A curious building, nay, out of place, in Chenies Street, WC1.

Chenies Street,London,WC1, England view map

It looks strangely and purely functional, not elaborately over designed like all the surrounding buildings. Now called the EISENHOWER CENTRE.This strange building conceals one of the great secrets of WW2.In 1940,the prospect of invasion by the Germans was taken seriously. This obscure building was one counter-insurgent measure laid out then.Back in the 1990's I was in this building,as a motorcycle courier, just to collect a package. It was then being used by a security firm,as a storage facility. The guard was delighted to show me around the facility.Inside, there is a central shaft, which goes down 150 ft.,with galleries/corridors every 10 ft. down. Some of these galleries are almost half a mile long.Their collective purpose was to house 10,000 troops to emerge behind the enemy in the event of London being over-run by the Germans. This was only one such facility. There's another in Camden and one in Clapham. There may have been more.
