Kjeungskær Lighthouse – one of the most photographed lighthouses in Norway. Built in 1880 and
automated in 1987, it is 20.6 m tall and has a range of 13.1 nautical miles. It started as a
“family” installation, i.e. the keeper lived at the lighthouse, together with his wife and children,
along with their own teacher. One of the teachers living there in 1938 described the living
conditions: “We used to put a rag in the sink to stop salt water spraying over the floor. If the
weather was really bad, the rag would fly out of the sink nearly hitting the ceiling.”
An interesting mirage in the image gives the distant islands the appearance of floating above the sea.
