SAW-PIT

Singleton Open Air Museum - West Sussex

Early 19th century Saw-pit Shed from Sheffield Park, Sussex.
Saw-pits were usually roughly constructed for short-term work in the woods, but permanent pits, like this one from Sheffield Park, were built in brick near workshops in villages. These permanent saw-pits were usually covered by a shed with one open side to allow timbers to be rolled down, and the Sheffield Park saw-pit shed is a good example of this. It was dismantled in 1977 and moved to Singleton in 1980.
