I stopped here, 40 km east of Dawson City on my way south towards Whitehorse to take this photo of the beginning of the Dempster Highway. This highway runs 736 km north through the subarctic terrain to Inuvik, Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River delta. Facilities are still few and far between on this desolate road and there are stretches of clay surface that can be slippery in wet weather.
During the winter months, the highway extends another 194 km (121 mi) to Tuktoyaktuk, on the northern coast of Canada, using frozen portions of the Mackenzie River delta as an ice road. The highway crosses the Peel River and the Mackenzie Rivers using a combination of seasonal ferry service and ice bridges.
Much of the Dempster Highway follows an old dog sled trail and was named after Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector William Dempster, who frequently ran the dog sled trail from Dawson City to Fort McPherson NWT.
