The Golden Altar was made by Volvinius in the 9th Century for the remains of
Saint Ambrose. Four Roman columns of porphyry support the 10th Century ciborium.
The mosaic of the apse dates from the 4th through 8th Centuries and was restored
after the 1943 bombings.
