Delphi - Karl and Temple of Apollo.jpg

The archaeological site at Delphi is divided into the Upper and Lower Sanctuaries.
Here Karl, our lecturer, friend and guide looks over the ruins of the Temple of Apollo in the Upper Sanctuary.
This temple was the location of the Delphic Oracle known as the "Pithia", a wise woman who sat on a tripod and gave out cryptic answers to important questions,
the answers in riddles that were frequently misinterpreted by the questioner.

The Delphic Oracle is thought to have been in some sort of trance, possibly influenced by fumes emitting from under the earth or a sacred spring under the temple.
Breathing in the vapors allowed her to make her predications of future events.

At any rate, her answers were not always what the recipient wanted to hear.
