A park run by the San Diego zoo in an area large enough to breed rare species for eventual release back into protected areas within their natural environments. The southern subspecies of the White Rhino was rescued from the brink of extinction by this and similar parks. At one time reduced to fewer than 50 individuals, this rhino now numbers more than 17,000 most of which reside within its former range in South Africa and Namibia.
