3rd - "Penelope's Hat"

Cheltenham, Glos

(1990 novel by Ronald Frame)

OK, it's Naomi's hat not Penelope's, and it's technically a riding skull, not a hat but hey! it's the thought that counts!! I must admit, Naomi did look at me somewhat askance when I asked her to bring it into the house after she'd been at the stables yesterday afternoon. "Why Dad?" she asked; "Well, I want to take a pic of it" I replied...."Ummm....OK then....if you really want to....." she said, looking like I'd asked her to do something strange, a little bit out of the ordinary!!

A straight forward shot - nothing complicated about this one, although it is a montage of two separate images. In the first the off-camera flash was at the left and at a perpendicular 45 degrees to the hat, in the second I positioned it down and more to the front left and at a more oblique angle, catching (part of) the flourescent strip which goes right over the hat front front to back. Both shots were opened in CS3 and then merged. A deft bit of handiwork with the Eraser revealed the best bits of both pics. And that's about it - oh yes, I flattened the image and desaturated the photo, but since this was 99% a B&W image to begin with, I didn't notice any real difference :o). Easy-squeezy-peasy - all done and dusted in less time than I took me to reheat the chili!!!

Looking at it in the cold light of day, I should have stopped down a tad - the focus point was on the top of the hat and at f/2.8 the front and sides are OoF. Didn't really see this until now; too late to change it now...ah well, you live and learn!

I'm feeling a bit like a slug after seeing all the work you are going through for this challenge... and then illustrating a book title besides. Great shot!
Now... how about that chili recipe?

Great lighting in this... it doesn't sound easy peasy to me but well done! I was also smiling at the exchange with your duaghter. I hope she liked the shot :)

Great image Doug...next time you'll have to get her to pose wearing the hat. About the 'easy-squeezy-peasy'....I think my chili would be burnt! :-)

Nice work with the lighting!
Walter Otto Koenig04-Jan-2010 02:41
Great shot with this lighting and some pretty fancy photoshop work. I like the way you multi-task shooting/processing and cooking at the same time. :)

Stewart Mitchell03-Jan-2010 22:17
....but she may not want to wear it again if she thinks it glows in the dark now!!! Great shot Doug and super lighting technique :)

Could be an ad shot! Nice lightning!

It looks very modern. I guess Horse riding has moved on like everything else. Nice work, all the lighting has paid off, you lost me on the Photoshop bits :-)

Nice shot, well lit, actually looks a little sinister in that light.

Kathryn03-Jan-2010 10:07
Love the shot, but it always makes me realise just how untechnical I am!
I like the story about Naomi thinking it strang you want to take a picture of the hat, my kids think I'm bonkers!
Guest 03-Jan-2010 09:41
Interesting shot, I always learn from your photo's! your control of light is great

Well, you certainly don't seem to need my critique, you've done a great job yourself. Thanks for the construction insight, always useful. You could consider making a selection of the hat and completely darkening the background, that'd be pretty incongruous...I like the leading line in on the right, but the stuff on the left is a little disorganized.
