Snowy buttes, Moab, Utah, 2009

An evening snowfall still clings to the sides of the massive buttes that fill much of my frame here. The foreground, however, is richly colored in reds, greens, and browns. The most important element of this image, however, is the road to the left of center that carries our eye deep into the frame. When it hits the foothills at the base of the buttes, it mysteriously vanishes, urging us to take this journey of grandeur in our own imaginations.

Thanks, Rose, for pointing out the role of the diagonals in this image. I liked the way the road mysteriously vanishes halfway into the image, as if it has been swallowed by the landscape itself.

I like the way the snow accents the diagonal lines. The road vanishes, and the diagonals take me to the top.
Also the image is grounded in earthy reds and is complimented by the soft grays.

I can assure you it was very cool here, Alina -- so cool that a warm parka is a must. Thanks for coming to this image.

The scene looks cool with the snow on the mountains. Beautiful shot Phil.

The snow makes the shot, Carol-- it dusts the desert scene in white and makes us chilly just to look at it.

Nothing like a light sugary snowfall to accentuate the wonderful textures of the buttes. Without the snow, we probably wouldn't be so aware of them, being so far away. It also seems to bring the buttes forward to my eye, and helps create that larger than life feeling.
