DOWNS VIEW FROM MILL HILL

Shoreham - West Sussex

In 1938 Mill Hill was presented to the people of Shoreham, and is now managed by the South Downs Conservation Board as it is a nationally famous butterfly site. This fame started from about 1820 when butterfly collecting became the vogue. There are large numbers of Chalkhill Blue Butterflies whose sole food is the Horseshoe Vetch which grows on Mill Hill, and altogether at least 30 species of butterflies have been positively identified here in the last three years.
This is the view due west over Erringham Farm, and beyond that over the Adur Valley to the hamlet of Coombes
