Gold Hill

Shaftesbury, Dorset

Gold Hill is a famous street in Shaftesbury in the English county of Dorset and one of the most photographed streets in England.
It is a steep cobbled street featured on the cover of countless books, chocolate boxes, and calendars of Dorset and
rural England. Thomas Hardy based his novels in this part of England, which he called Wessex.

Gold Hill also became famous in a television commercial for Hovis bread directed by Ridley Scott in 1973, recently voted the
favorite commercial of all time in England. It can be seen at

Whatever the weather conditions, Gold Hill in Dorset always looks picturesque.
As you rightly pointed out Jay, the scene was further popularized by the 'Hovis' bread advert back in the early 70's (surprising how fast time goes!) and is firmly imprinted in the British public's mind.
A really neat shot from the optimum position - you did justice to the place.
