Isle of Wight, Hampshire, UK

From the BBC Legacies website again (part 2):
"However, de Godeton and his fellow wine lovers also had to reckon with the might of the Catholic Church.
It transpired that the wine had belonged to the religious community of Livers, in Piccardy.
They lodged a complaint against de Godeton to the Vatican, and a harsh verdict was handed down.

"Walter de Godeton had to pay penance. He was ordered to build, on the downs above the scene of the disaster, a lighthouse to warn ships of the dangers.
He was also ordered to build an oratory for a priest to say masses for the souls of those lost at sea. Walter de Godeton completed his building works by 1328.

"Henry VIII's breakaway from the Catholic Church in 1534 and the suppression of the chantries and religious guilds in 1547 changed everything.
He closed the oratory down, so the lighthouse fell into disrepair."
