After feeding the brood, the mother lowered her head into the chicks, and they all pressed closely to her. I can see no reason for this behavior other than affection. These are very devoted parents. They have recently fought off an aggressive approach by three much larger Turkey Vultures. Despite the very demanding task of raising these chicks, they still take time to engage in playful flight with their juveniles from last year.
