This is a statue of Fré Meis. It was made by Christine Chiffrun.
Fré Meis died in 1992. He was famous. Many did not agree with his politics (he was one of the
leaders of the Dutch communist party CPN) but he was respected for his strength and his goodness.
When his active days in politics were over he continued to help poor people with advice and money,
while he and his wife lived in a small apartment in Groningen city.
This statue in the town of Oude Pekela means to honour him. He was born here, and he fought for
better wages and better conditions for the factory workers here.
