Jardin Delaselle

Île de Batz, Brittany, France

The 'exotic garden' Jardin Georges Delaselle is located on the Eastern tip of Batz island (Penn ar C'hleger).
Georges Delaselle was a Parisian insurer who fell under the spell of Batz. In 1897 he decided to create a private oasis on the island.
He bought a large piece of land at Penn ar C’hleguer Point. Here he planted Lambert cypresses, Holm oaks and Austrian black pines,
to protect the site from wind and spray. He dug basins in the dunes for his garden to shelter the plants.
In 1937, having exhausted his resources and money, he was forced to sell the property. The garden became neglected.
In 1987 a team of volunteers decided to restore the garden. Today it is once again in very good condition and it now features
more than 2.000 plant and tree species from all continents, including an exceptional collection of rare palm trees.
It is open to the public (entrance fee).
