Way of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross line a pathway in the beautiful lower garden.

*****

We went back to the Franciscan Monastery in NE Washington because last year there had been lots of butterflies in their garden, and quite frankly, because we couldn’t go anywhere else due to street closures everywhere for protests and other major gardens still being closed on account of the pandemic.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

Koi gathering, posted earlier:

This is a thought provoking image.

In her book “On Viewing Pain and Suffering” Susan Sontag references the stations of the cross as an early example of the depiction of pain and suffering. She also points out that the context in which the depiction of pain and suffering is shown is as important as the depiction itself.

This causes me to thing if the having these depictions of the suffering of Christ in such a beautiful setting some how normalizes the suffering of others and causes people to be more accepting of it and less likely to do anything about it.

A thought, which to my mind, is relevant today. V
