'Irish Elk,' on display since 1872

Often called the “Irish Elk,” this giant deer ranged far beyond Ireland, and its closest living relative is the fallow deer, not the elk. It is the Smithsonian’s oldest mounted fossil skeleton, on display since 1872.

*****

The “dinosaur exhibit” -- as everybody calls it, although it’s much more than that -- in the newly reopened fossil hall at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History is fascinating.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.
