Posing protestors

We went to a protest on Saturday at the US Capitol, just to see what was going on. A large group of people protesting the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Brett Kavanagh to the US Supreme Court had stormed the steps of the Capitol and stayed there until they were led away by the police one by one and arrested. We were in a large, very emotional crowd in front of them, taking pictures.

Regardless of whether one favors his confirmation or not, I believe this was a case of democracy in action.

Civil disobedience is what this country was built upon. Imagine if the colonists didn't’ protest......we’d still be under the crown (which is preferable to 45). V

The next step is to vote one's convictions in the midterm elections. And in the elections to come after that. Voting is where serious voices will really be heard. This demonstration is kind of like the 2016 post election Women's March. Protesting gets attention. Unfortunately, most protests are quickly forgotten. Things just move on. Hopefully, these protesters stay honestly motivated enough to vote.

I don't think it's proven Kavanagh did something wrong but I am worried about democracy in general and especially in the US having a president who anything he does not like calls fake!
Great image Helen!!

Thanks for braving the situation to get this shot. The festive poses kind of deter from the seriousness of the situation though.

I would not want to be there. I spent a lot of time protesting when I was in my early 20s. We took buses to D.C and would stay for days, sleeping on the bus. Now, I try to avoid political discussions altogether, V and great reportage, Helen.

...and no doubt some of the more "conservative" among us would comment that if the girls holding the signs got raped, they would have deserved it because they were dressed provocatively.

the rich and powerful get away with a lot...lively capture of the moment here...odd they were arrested for an apparently peaceful protest...whatever happened to freedom of speech?
