Floating tree

In a dramatic (and temporary) departure from my Hillwood Estate gallery, this was the Potomac River on Saturday at Great Falls Park, about a 20-minute drive from DC. We had had heavy rainfall for the last six days, and the river had reached flood stage, cresting on Sunday.

We saw a number of trees being carried down the river along with a huge amount of debris, which we later saw when crossing the river in the middle of Washington. A lot of debris had piled up against the piers of one bridge. No idea where the trees went.

A fast flowing , dangerous stream here with its immense power hidden just below the frothing waters. I can hear the roar and smell the earthy aroma here! V

what a torrent...it seams odd to have such challenging conditions at this time of year..
