The elusive cormorant

We took a drive down the George Washington Parkway, which runs along the Potomac River to Mount Vernon (Washington’s plantation), thinking maybe we could find some birds to practice photographing.

This double-crested cormorant (thanks to Tom Munson for the ID) was a very elusive subject and obviously didn’t want to pose for a picture, but he or she was so pretty, especially with that blue eye, that I just had to post something (greatly cropped).

Washington State’s Marcus Whitman, posted earlier:

Nice capture with the characteristic head high neck position during swimming! The cormorants are a "different breed of cat" in the bird world. I have often seen them in the company of fellow cormorants, but never close to another species. They tend to be secretive and obsessively cautious. V

I love cormorants - You did a great job with this - pretty soon you'll be getting a shot of one with its wings spread out to dry!

pretty good again, at least with a D810 you have something to crop

A nice find. Bird photography requires lots of patience and really expensive zoom lenses!
