Loon mask, 1981

We also visited the National Museum of the American Indian, a relatively new Smithsonian museum that I had visited after it first opened. I remember not liking it much then, and still am not enamored with it, although some of the displays are interesting.

Thanks to David (globalgadabout) for identifying the kind of bird this is.

This loon mask, part of the "Window on Collections" display, was designed by Edward Kiokun (1903-1998), Cup'ik [Mekoryuk, Nunivak Island, Alaska] and made from driftwood and bird quills.

How pretty and unusual - love this shot V
PS Loons have have to be my favourite water fowl - their haunting calls on the lakes create such an eerie and mournful atmosphere.

A beautiful work of art. I especially like the fish in its beak.
