World’s Largest Pecan, Brunswick, Missouri

We visited the US Botanic Garden’s annual “Season’s Greenings” display titled “Roadside Attractions” featuring plant-based recreations of iconic sights from across the United States, with G gauge model trains chugging around, below, through and above the displays.

Constructed by pecan farmer George James, the Giant Pecan is made of concrete and is a tribute to the Starking Hardy Giant pecan variety, which James discovered. The pecan is 7 feet tall and 12 feet long, and weighs 12,000 pounds. It is a contender for the title of World’s Largest Pecan. Brunswick is considered the pecan capital of Missouri and holds a Pecan Festival every year.

Building materials: cedar bark, Harry Lauder’s walking stick, shelf fungus, cedar slice grapevine

Actually, there's a great story to this Pecan. Originally, the World's Largest Pecan was in SEGUIN Texas. Since 1962, Seguin billed itself as "Home of the World's Largest Pecan, " But a bigger Pecan now stands near the town of Brunswick, Missouri. Seguin's motto has remained "Home of the World's Largest Pecan," regardless of how many postcards are mailed from Brunswick to Seguin's Chamber of Commerce. V
