Sümela frescoes

Sümela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery situated in the Pontic Mountains of Trabzon province at a height of about 1,200 meters (3,900 feet). It was founded in AD 386 during the reign of Emperor Theodosius and reached its present form in the 13th century during the Empire of Trebizond. The monastery was abandoned in 1923 following the forced removal of the Greek population in this region. Its primary function today is as a tourist attraction, but in 2015 the monastery was closed to visitors for three years due to necessary restoration and fieldwork stemming from an increase in rock falls. It was open when we were there, but the path to get to it was treacherous and scary. Tim went, but I just watched, and he took this picture of the frescoes at its entrance.

Wow a great image Helen, a nice picture of the frosco's around the entrance gate, these seem to be reasonably well intact notwithstanding they are in the open air, very nice work BV
