'Objects of Wonder': Movable eyes and jaw

We went to an exhibit titled “Objects of Wonder: From the Collections of the National Museum of Natural History,” an interesting display of items that examines how scientists use the Smithsonian collections to enlighten and illuminate our understanding of nature and human culture. I took a few pictures, but most of it was more appropriate for viewing and reading about than photographing.

“A ceremonial mask from British Columbia (1883), with movable eyes and lower jaw, which would have inspired veneration,” says the sign. Those metallic looking teeth were what caught my attention. Thanks to William Barletta for getting rid of some reflections for me.

This is the last picture from this exhibit. I wish I could have taken more, but it was quite dark in there, and things like chunks of whale earwax probably don’t make the greatest captures ;-). Still, I might have another go at it on a future visit because there were some other interesting displays in there.

I love the way you captured this. It looks like it's floating in space. It's very eerie and more so knowing the mouth and eyes can move. V.

strong POV does this mask true justice...very possibly a stylized Orca above the left eye definitely linking this with the PNW....

It is from the Haida Nation, on the Pacific coast of British Columbia. This is a superb mask, the colors reflect authenticity as all the used colors were the results of 'colorants' found in nature, berries, roots etc.
