Totem

This totem pole was situated at a restaurant high in the Portland hills. Thanks to Raymond and his very informative comment below, I now know this is a genuine work from the Haida Nation.

“The indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest coast are composed of many nations and tribal affiliations, each with distinctive cultural and political identities, but they share certain beliefs, traditions and practices, such as the centrality of salmon as a resource and spiritual symbol.” (Wikipedia)

There must have been something special about the restaurant that led it to have a real totem pole. Great shot.

It is from the Haida Nation in British Columbia (Canada). They were the original authors of Totems. This one is a real one and I know it by the colors! Original colors were made from bark, roots, plants, berries etc., thus their matted colors. To the Haida Nation, totems are like our handwriting, they describe the family history etc., and not simply any sculptures piled up on top of one another, each has a significance and can be read as a story. This one is one fine example, first class.
