Oman used the be the center of a thriving trade in frankincense, and today frankincense trees still proliferate in southern Oman, where incense and perfumes are produced from the aromatic resin of the trees. It’s not just a tourist thing; people actually use it to scent their homes.
I think most everybody has heard of frankincense, at least as one of the gifts brought to the Christ child by the three kings, but for me personally, I had no idea where it came from, how it was produced and certainly not that it was still in production today. I was fascinated, and took this picture of a frankincense tree on the grounds of The Museum of the Frankincense Land.
