Sewell Belmont House, 1800

Built in 1800 by Robert Sewell, this house was rented to Albert Gallatin, who drafted the Louisiana Purchase here. American soldiers fired on the British from this house, when the British invaded in 1814; it was the only house in the city to resist the attack. It was purchased by the National Women's Party and is home to the desk where the still unratified Equal Rights Amendment of 1923 was drafted.
