27-DEC-2012 DK Hein 2012

Why before? Because starting in 2013 this part of the Kona International Airport terminal will
begin the process of going thru *major* changes. The first thing to happen will be the demolition
of that long rectangular building at the top of the parking lot. In its place will be the new
Ellison Onizuka Memorial Museum. The new building will replace the triangular-shaped building
just above it, and once the relocation is complete that building will be torn down to make way
for a centralized screening facility and the start of a new round of terminal renovations. The
whole program, if it can go forward uninterrupted by politics, etc, should last 5-7 yrs, and cost
upwards of $200M. With that the facility will be good for another 20-30 yrs of expanding service.

Update 12/31/13: Construction on the new museum building is now expected to start in early 2014.

Cool shot, but since it's going to record changes in the landscape, is more than that...
