17. Marcus P. Norton – Tinmouth, Vt – Attorney, Inventor – Practiced law in Troy, NY, New York City, and Washington, DC. One of the primary witnesses against Dr Samuel Mudd in the Lincoln assassination tribunal. Norton claimed while he was staying at a hotel in Washington, DC prior to the assassination (he was in DC for Lincoln's , a man he later recognized as Dr Mudd burst into his room. The man apologized saying he believed it to be John Wilkes Booth's room. Dr Mudd claimed he had not known Booth prior to setting his broken leg after the assassination. To this day there is a large amount of controversy concerning Dr Mudd's involvement in the Lincoln assassination as well as Norton's involvement.
