20151020 669 - 691 Hudsonian Godwitr1.jpg

Ottawa West

A set of nine close-crop images of the Godwit catching, holding on to, dropping and re-catching a leech. The leech would at times wrap itself right around the Godwit's bill (images 1 & 2) and the Godwit would then remove it with its foot (images 8 & 9), drop it back into the water, then re-catch it. This was sometimes repeated several times before the leech was finally swallowed. The Godwit caught many leeches in an hour. Some it would swallow fast, others it seemed took several minutes before the leech finally went down the hatch.

Don't know if you've ever 'dealt with' a leech, but I have this image of this poor godwit's stomach with leeches attached!
