One of the families of House Sparrows residing in our yard. We have had lots of House Sparrows over the past five years or more. Presently, there are 4 - 5 families and probably a total of some 24 that have made our yard their home. I've had numerous people tell me that they don't see House Sparrows very often anymore. Well come to my yard and I'll give you some. They are eating me out of house and home. I spend upwards of $300 on bird food every year, mostly eaten or thrown out by the Sparrows. But, they are still God's creatures and fun to watch, especially the young. They are also quite pretty.
House Sparrows were first brought to North America from Britain in the late 19th century . They were imported to help control pests in orchards etc. But, they multiplied so rapidly that they were already considered pests by 1883. They are now one of the most abundant birds in North America, with an estimated population of approximately 150 million. (Wikipedia).
