NOVEMBER 2012 POSTS - posts, starting with March 2009, are archived in:
November 30, 2012
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and holiday weekend.
Apparently so as it seems most everyone is too stuffed/immobile or too busy to write in.
Doris though, found a few moments here and there to write and email her promised lengthy note(s)... thank you.
I've been a bit busy myself and not, thankfully, too stuffed/immobile... keeping this response short.

( Here's Doris' promised lengthy note below... well... actually a condensed compilation of emails she sent )
A shorter note this time, so take heart.
I checked out one of the Phase sites you listed, and couldn't recognize a soul without printed names accompanying photos.
A few had name tags which i could read which helped.
Can you help me locate Raynor and Clifford Young.
Brenda Ignacio now finally united with her first long-time love, Robert.
Do you know that I remember their attraction for each other way back in the day.
What a wonderful path mingling those two in matrimony, finally!!
I've only played the slots in a casino in NC, like twice. Nowhere else.
But, get this. I join 3 gals every month to gamble over wine and pupus------nothing but penny ante stuff, occasionally up to a
dime but no higher. Blackjack. Texas Hold 'em. Baseball. High-Low. 4-4-4. 5 card stud. Couple others.
All in good fun and mostly to gossip. I'm the dealer so i call the plays. Silly nonsense but we've been at this for close to 14 yrs.
One of these days, I will have to force myself to visit Vegas just to say I finally did it.
The other bros, sister, and I with couple of the bros' wives always hang out when I return to visit.
Main activity being EATING out, of course! I try to lose 5-6 lbs. right before these trips home, knowing I'll gain all of it back,
and more, with each visit.
All that grinding! Yummy and fun, though.
... ... ... ... ...
Yah!! Finally got a fairly good look at the folks I asked you to locate for me.
Noticed that Raynor's wife not in any photos, though.
But I still need your help with pointing out who is who in both photos supposedly Cliff Young is in; I don't recognize either of
the guys. Sorry.
And you are certainly unrecognizable at this stage!
In other words, if I were to meet you at a restaurant, for instance, I'd never have picked you out in the crowd.
You had dark, curly, longish hair in front in HS.
Jane Mock remotely recognizable.
Not even Seda Deguchi who looks so totally different from HS; not Japanese looking anymore.
Anyway, thank you so much for bending over backwards to save me the trouble of searching high and low for old chums.
See why I needed your help, as with no printed names and the time since we all graduated, no one familiar looking anymore??
I'm not surprised that I wrote such lengthy Alohas in everyone's yearbook, yours included.
Brevity wasn't my strength then. Hmmm, have I changed in my old age??
No more worthwhile news to share right now. Will await news from you then take it from there. Mahalo again!
... ... ... ... ...
Once again, Mahalo for going to the trouble of locating these folks, a few I didn't even ask for.
But since I have you on my screen, would you do me another favor by asking the following permission for you to forward me
their e-mail address..........Stella Okumoto and LaVerne Nishimura?
BTW, Frances Takasaki came thru yesterday with a nice lengthy response. So thanks for that again!
Tell me how you know exactly where each person is stored in those Pbase sites if anyone, like me, asks??
I got another glimpse of you, man. Seriously, you don't resemble the old Hal I knew in HS.
Now I'm beginning to wonder if I have the right guy!
You look more Asian in the 2 photos I've seen to date vs. more hapa (part-Haw'n, part Asian) in the past.
Any photos in those sites, or elsewhere, of your sister (Elsie?)? Was she your twin or a year younger?
Where did you live when attended KHS? I don't remember if I asked you before, esp after reconnecting with all those folks recently.
I lived on 4th Ave and Lincoln Ave. near kapahulu and Crane Park.
That park used to be regularly frequented by me and my siblings.
Some rough buggahs hung out there at the time, when looking back now.
Funny how they didn't seem so scary, intimidating then........guess naivete or ignorance on my part.
A good friend of mine who lives here, Lyn, former RN/nutrition educator (she attended St. Andrews Priory, 3 yrs behind me in school),
sent me a site very recently disclosing lead and other unhealthy ingredients in MUI, stuff we all grew up eating.
And to think that I used to work at a Chinese seeds store off and on some years ago, eating the stuff to my heart's content!
Not only mui but arsenic in RICE, esp. brown rice from places like NY and the southern states, with CA, India, and couple other Asian
countries being safer. Food for thought (sorry about the pun).
Temps today and rest of the week predicted to rise into high 50's and 60's. Was wonderful yesterday too.
Every time I see clear blue skies with smattering of fat clouds, I'm out the door for a brisk walk.
Draws me like a magnet with thoughts lingering throughout on Hawaii which then triggers homesickness. Seriously.
Hope you're feeling blessed living in Paradise! All the ethnic foods! Man, how I miss all of it!
Enjoy whatever is in store for you, and family, today! And write soon, OK?

Thanks yet again, Hal, for the 4th reconnection consequent to the last class reunion which I didn't attend.
But bec. you got my name out there, now Frances is my first wahine contact.
The others are, Raynor, and Slug.

I owe you a lengthy note which is coming in couple days.
Been busier than usual with high number of hospice visits this week.
Beginning Spanish class tomorrow. Let's see what this aging, sluggish brain can learn.

Hope your week going well. Very cold now!

Is this your only e-mail address? Which one should I send personal notes to?
And in the future, if you see anything in my notes to you that might have audience appeal or interest, feel free to place in your blog.
Raynor has written me 3 very long detailed notes already.
Gosh, he turned into quite a success story, having traveled all over, working for Clinton in a Fishery something-or-other federal dept
for 5 yrs., and so on. You may already know much of his story by now.

And now another old, dear friend has surfaced and which may take on legs as it has with Raynor, and, hopefully, YOU.

Pls fill me in on your life since we parted in 1960. If you've attended other class reunions.
Which one drew the biggest attendance, BTW? When the next one will be.

Must admit something. I have NEVER, and I mean Never, ever stepped foot in Vegas!! Not ever. Have had no desire to, frankly.
Thus, have deliberately not attended class reunions which I knew were going to be held there.
Another tender point is that most reunions, I've learned after the events, are attended by married couples.
Being single, and without a steady man in my life since my divorce, I've felt awkward about joining the group.
But, after hooking up with some of you guys, though strictly thru e-mail at this stage, I might be persuaded to attend the next reunion.
Must admit that I'm so curious to see how all of you look in person, more so bec. I couldn't recognize one blooming soul in all those
snapshots on your blog.
Not one except for my BFF Carolyn Eugenio Canubida, her hubby, and Brenda Ignacio.
I think I recognized Andy Nakano, guy sitting next to Carlos at the slots, if I'm right.

Pls send me a recent photo of you with wife or with anyone else I might have known in HS.
That's so I'll recognize you if I happen to bump into you next time I'm home, which most likely will be in 2013.
I promise I'll look you up then.

My hospice volunteer work keeps me busy, and satisfied, week after week.
More enjoyable when don't get called in to work (speech therapy) at one of the nursing homes I cover.
Shouldn't complain bec., like you said, we should be thankful for the extra work when we can get it during our retirement years.
Weather today predominantly wet, drippy, with most of our leaves covering roads and sidewalks like a carpet of reds/yellows/orange,
leaving all trees practically nude.
Temps. in mid-to-high 50's today, yesterday, and much lower at nite.
Yo-yo weather going from 50's one day to 60's the next to high 40's after that and back to 50's, etc.
Fall in TN, esp. where I live which is in higher mountainous area of the state, absolutely beautiful.
At the other end of the state is Memphis, home of Elvis' Graceland, a big tourist attraction.
One of Raynor's daughter's lives in a 5-hr drive from my place.
We may get to see each other when he visits her and his grandkids in Jan. '13. Sure would be something to look forward to!

I thought you mentioned having grandkids yourself. No? I'm not a Tutu yet.
My older son and wife told me some time ago that they would not be having any kids, ever.
My younger son's single and doesn't have a steady wahine in his life now, so haven't a clue what's ahead for him.
I have never bugged either son about having keikis, unlike many hopeful mothers wanting grandkids, thank heavens.

That's it for now. Need to pay another pt. a visit. Looking forward to hearing something back from you, ol' boy.
Maybe attached will be a photo..........hint, hint.

My best-------and Aloha!

Hey, if this the Doris Toyooka who is married to...I think the "original" Don Johnson and not the Miami Vice dude...
I think I played football with Don at UH.

Would you pass on my email address to her, if she wants to "talk story"?

November 5, 2012
Vernon, the world it seems becomes smaller and smaller at every turn doesn't it.
Sorry Bessie, not that I didn't notice a pretty face gone but I was preoccupied with another then and still am.
Vernon brought a sport jacket to the banquet but he hadn't worn it and generously wanted to give it to me.
Would have been perfect to wear at the banquet as it was green and had a KHS bulldog logo patch stitched
on to it but alas I was so busy, doing much of nothing I suppose, that I forgot to wear it then.
Actually, Doris, it isn't not wanting to be the middle guy... to the contrary, I enjoy being so, as I get to know more
of our classmates via email.
My concerns are more on security and privacy for classmate email addresses and any other highly personal info.
So, everyone who wishes, please do contact me to pass on a request to make contact with another classmate...
that's where the email addresses will be visible, but not on the blog.
Would be delighted to be a regular, Doris, though I haven't been regular since I turned 65.
Your name has now been mentioned... several times in fact, within this blog.
Hey, Doris... who you calling 'makule'... funny isn't it, everyone younger than us is viewed as really young, and
those older are viewed as 'really old'... we're 'just right' no matter how old we've become.
And I don't see myself as being all 'hung out'... I've shriveled and shrunken so much over the years from my once
hulking six-foot frame, there isn't anything left to hang out.
Great to hear you're still the generous and caring soul I knew, wiliingly volunteering and all.
Glad you were able to view the photos, Louise... it's probably the old 'broken link' bugaboo again.
For everyone else, should you not be able to click on any link you see on the blog, try copying that link and
pasting it into your internet browser of choice.
Again, no problems Raynor, no 'no direct contact' policy so no pilikia... all is good.
Mahalo, June... great photos... they are now posted on the Pbase site along with those from other classmates.
Pearl Shimooka Mori provided me with some photos to copy onto the Pbase site... they are of the 1983 reunion in
LV at the Ohana Room in the California Hotel... have posted them on the Pbase site and need help in ID'g the
classmates within some of the photos, especially the group photo, Mahalo for any input :
I'm assuming the above was for a belated 40th birthday reunion celebration... not sure as I missed it.
I did see a much more relaxed and very happy Robert Gore and Brenda... even got a great big hug from Robert.
Forgot to tell Doris that she could sign her email with whatever she wanted... within reasonable boundaries of
course... one of our classmates even signs emails with just a . , yes a dot, won't reveal a name but the initials
are Gerri B. D. ... others sign with their nicknames... so no problem, I can figure out (usually) who's who.

Hi Hal!

I´ve got to hand it to you and the reunion committee, again.
What a superb job you all did! I had a totally good time.
Renewing aquaintances, the comaraderie, grand entertainment, ono kaukau, and the splendid setting of Hotel
California and casino.

I am also writing in hopes you can provide a bit of info.
At the party, I ran into a old and dear friend from Kapahulu: Stanley Kea.
We sat at the same table along with his wife and had a ball reminiscing on the old days hanging out and growing
up on Makaleka St.
What I failed to ask Stanley (who is a couple years older than me) or his wife, was his wife`s name.
She has to have been one of the KHS 60 grads or she and Stan would not have been there together.
Would you by chance know who she is?
I am assuming they´re married.

Appreciate any info you might dig up.

All best wishes,
Uncle Charlie

Yes it's before 4AM here and I'm up... actually I got up earlier to start working on the next blog when I saw your message.

Stanley is married to our classmate Bessie (Shimabukuro) Mukai-Kea.
She was a classmate of mine from intermediate to high school, but she had transferred by her junior year and graduated from Mckinley in '60.
That's probably why you didn't know her... to be honest, I didn't know she had transferred until several reunions ago.
I've actually known her since small kid time as she was a cousin of an old Waialae neighbor of mine and visited his family often.

Hey, thanks for the jacket, that was real generous of you... should have worn it at the banquet but was so busy with everything else I forgot.
Now I'll have to check my schedule for the next wedding or function I can wear it for... not many opportunities in Hawaii to wear a jacket.

Mahalo and Aloha,

Talk about convoluted explanation for simply meaning "make your own contacts!"
That way, you're not the middle-guy.
However, you're a great facilitator, this time, anyway, as Raynor and I are now gonna be e-mail buddies.
For however long he/we desire.
Till the stream of news runs dry.
Want to be my e-mail regular too, Hal?
By regular, I mean whenever you/I get the notion to get in touch with each other.
If you mention my name to others, and hear he/she might be interested in getting in touch with me, feel free to
give my address and we can see where it goes.

Thanks for both forwarding my note to Raynor and for resubmitting the snapshots link.
Can't wait to get in touch with the guy!
Hmmmm, need to ask about what the "B....." stands for???
I definitely need to reconnect with some of you folks on my next trip home as every single one of you in the pix
nothing like i remember from KHS days!!!
All of you have gotten so makule!!!
Me too, of course, but I'm not in any of those snapshots.
Thank goodness for Lady Clairol, make-up, corsets, body suits under clothing, etc.
Feel sorry for the guys who have to let it all hang out.

I'm more or less retired, from FT or even regular part-time work (speech pathologist), but am on an on-call basis
at 3 small nursing homes who call me when they're desperate for coverage.
Work sporadically, some weeks nothing, some weeks only 1 day, etc.
Can go 2 or more weeks in succession with no work.
A blessing having Soc. Security and other retirement funds to depend on or would be like so many our age forced
to continue grinding away to make a living.

My 2 sons another blessing.
The older is now 41, married to a gal from Hungary (so English is her second language), NO KEIKIS yet or in the
horizon by choice (sigh!).
Younger son lives near Atlanta, 37 in 3 wks, still single, manager of a Nike outlet store.
I do weekly volunteer work with a local hospice agency, with 2 patients on current caseload.
Very rewarding despite what everyone seems to think about working with the "active dying."
Thanks again for this monumental project of reunion planning then collating pix for the album to send to all.

Did not mean to cause so much pilikia.
Forgot about no direct contact policy.

Mahalo Nui
My reply to Raynor :
Actually, my bad... didn't make myself clear enough.
There really isn't a 'no direct contact' policy in place.
Rather it's more of a 'do it this way if you're going through me' contact policy.
In fact, I do want and encourage direct contact beyond the blog.
But since I prefer, as does the majority I'm sure, not to show contact info on the blog, I do it my kapakahi way.
So my 'out on a limb' really meant I made the bold presumption that I didn't need to send emails back forth
between you two as I normally do to ensure mutual agreement on direct contact.
Now if you understand everything I've said above, please explain it to me later... I think I'm confused myself.
Anyway... whatevah... no pilikia so no problem.

Hi Hal,

These are a few pictures from the Las Vegas reunion.
I didn’t take too many on this trip.
The first picture was some of the classmates on the Valley of Fire bus tour and the rest were taken at the dinner.

Those are great pictures June, much appreciated.
Especially the VOF picture as I don't have anything other than the slot tournament and the banquet.

Aloha, wonderful Kaimuki Bulldogs!

Robert and I are so glad we made the trek to Las Vegas for this reunion.
We feel like we have been given such a gift to have reconnected and returned to our own "happy days" with
such sweet and kind memories.
Robert celebrated his 70th on October 7, so it was a fresh and appropriate celebration.

It was so good to see so many and also some for the first time since graduation, and catching up with Andy
Nakano and others.
Words cannot sufficiently express the feeling we got from individuals who took the time to "corner" us to either
congratulate us on our marriage or encourage us to continue to share our exciting travels and unfoldment of
our life purpose on this blog.
Quite honestly we were reticent to do so, not wanting to monopolize or boast, so the "go team" words meant
a lot!

So many mentioned a more relaxed and happy Robert, as well as a happy and peaceful Brenda, and we know
that our reconnection has given us many more years on this earth, for which we are very grateful.
We want to attend many more reunions and give and receive life enhancing hugs, so please take care of
yourselves and choose love with eyes of aloha, words of aloha, ears of aloha, hearts of aloha.

Gosh, there were so many beautiful outfits, green, gold, pink, black, ...... what a good looking bunch!
It was our first slot tournament, pecking away like maniacs......can't even fathom how that works, but what fun!
The food was very good, the musicians were wonderful, and we absolutely enjoyed all of it.
In a perfect world, we would have loved to see the sweet and loving Bobbie, with her paper plates and her
"dancing in the moonlight" dance, Caroline, who is always fun, and Sheila, with her huge heart .... our
Kaimuki version of "Charlie's Angels."

Thanks Hal for all you do, thanks again to Pearl and the committee, and generous donors, .... thanks for

With abundant love,
Brenda and Robert

Hal, HELP!! I couldn't open the site for those reunion pix.
Wonder if you could re-route different way??
Or it might be this ancient computer needing the boot (and I don't mean "reboot").

Great reading some of the comments from former friends.
Would love to get directly to Raynor T., who used to be my seatmate in few classes since our last names
begin with "T".
He was such a nerd back then, so so smart and funny, that we connected.
Like a brother to me.
In fact, he helped me compose an essay which took first place at KHS, which then enabled me to enter it
at regional level, but which got so slammed/boo'ed by the judges that it was embarrassing!!
"My Greatest Security" was topic.
I have to tell him about it.

Thanks for your input on how to download.

doris toyooka johnson (hey, do I have to always spell out my entire name for future notes?)
My reply to Doris and Ray :
OK, I'm gonna crawl out on a limb here... will presume both of you are OK with direct contacting.
I know, I know Ray, it goes directly against my policy-procedure that I've set here.
But after reading both of your emails I'll make that grand assumption... and hope it doesn't come back to bite me.

Doris, you'll see Ray's email address in his email below and also on the 'To:' line in this email.
Ray, if I have to tell you what to do next, you can turn in your 'puter to the teacher as you leave, and hey... who you calling "B****" .

Doris, or Dodo, or B****, if you're unable to get the link to work, try highlighting and copying it to whatever browser you're using.
Or, go to the Pbase page with all the links listed... the recent October reunion photo link is there too.

But to, hopefully, make it easier, I'll post the link again below :

Hope the links above work this time... something tells me I'm gonna have to send a corrected link to all the other listed classmates.

It is very exciting to see that you re-surfaced after all these years.
As a result of the beginning letter of our last name we shared many "Homeroom" hours at KHS.
I still remember that you had a nickname but will refrain from stating it except that it started with the
letter "B".
It would have been really great to get together in Vegas but, I am sure there will be other opportunities.
I missed a lot of them myself because of an endless series of business trips and conferences.
