Vern, hope you received and saw the latest cookbook corrections in one of the previous eblogs...
if not, I heard maybe a supplemental flyer with corrections will be sent out to cookbook purchasers.

Pam, it's too bad you can't make it to the LV reunion... maybe a mini-reunion here in Jan-Feb...
your classmates/friends await.

Whoa, Gerri... li-hing-mui magarita... with spam-macadamia-nut pupu... winnah.

OK Seda... and the others... let me know if and when.

Heard of an inquiry about the Fremont Experience light show... realized there may be some who've

Hola Hal, Pearl, Carl, Muriel, Roy, Bobbie - The cook book arrived in yesterday's mail.
Beaucoup Mahalos.
Now I´ve got to read it and put into play some of those old time, island "remedies"
that I miss so very, very much.

Aloha Virginia (gotta get use to Ginny), Harold, Elsie, Vernon,
Our pleasure to know that your family enjoyed the gift certificate for Side St Inn.
Great place for anyone especially families.
The Kapahulu Side St. Inn is equipped w/ Central AC, recessed lighting, large booths,
view of golf course, etc.
Also dining is like in a first class steak house, decor has beautiful dark wood, spacious,
separate room w/lots seating etc. is rare.
Great place to kick-back after a hard day.
What a magnificent treat for all.
Since it was only 2 weeks old, service was slow but a great fun place, prices are also higher,
portions smaller.
This is a winner though for the Kapahulu neighborhood, Kaimuki McCully, Waikiki etc.
A gorgeous comfortable restaurant, welcoming ambience, yummy food, yet fantastic ohana
feel without having to drive into town.
The Inn was packed with local type patrons, grandparents, young couples, babies, children,
birthday parties, well dressed t-shirts, shorts, slippers, large waithelp fantastic,
you don't find this type of beautiful surroundings to enjoy tasty island culture food and
ambience anywhere and locally owned.
Not a franchise or fast food place nothing beats this as far as I can see for now.
For a Tuesday evening, the place was jammed with a small line waiting for tables.
Public parking is adjacent and valet service available.
Virginia, let me know when you return we would love to get together somehow,
have you tasted their li hing mui magarita, gotta try it.

Wam aloha, gerri and jack.

Elsie, gave your message to Tom who is doing well, we will be hearing from Tom soon.
Elsie, Tom appreciates your message and sends his regards.
Told Tom that when he is ready we will get together for a great time,
Tom will give me a call to do this since Tom has been itching to see everyone.
When speaking to Tom in April, he just had his surgery and could not make the reunion party
to see everyone.
Tom sounded great as usual and he will be in touch.

Clifford and Kim are fantastic hosts and have a wonderful beachhouse right on the beach,
not to mention their incredible home in Pasadena.
We are of course all jealous that we will be missing out but wishing you all a blast of a party
with the Chings.

Warmest aloha, gerri and jack digmon

A few scribbled notes from listening in at last night's reunion committee meeting :
So far, the count for the LV reunion luncheon is over 100... I'm assuming that includes guests.
The slot tournament, slated for Saturday 10/9 7PM at Main Street, has over 40 signees.
Over 30 have expressed interest in group activities other than golf and the slot tournament...
the 'Jersey Boys' show having over 10 and shopping just under.
Golf is on Friday at noon and Monday at 10AM according to Ron.
So far, from what I picked up, entertainment will be provided by C. Amoy, M. Cabang and R. Hind.
An all-inclusive group singing was also being contemplated.
V. Kekipi and J. Nakamura are thinking of making-providing a table favor for each attendee...
gratis... nice gesture on their part.
Suggestion (request ?) was made for all (or at least most) to attend in class or school colors or in
period attire (drapes? ducktails? beehives? crinolins? Sheila ?)

Also picked up listening in... though the stated dates for responses, requests, reservations for the luncheon,
golf, slots and other activies have already passed they will still be accepted if they can be accommodated
and if they are submitted within a reasonable time period... so I take that to mean send them in anyway
and the committee will see what can be done.

Corrections to the corrections for the cookbook below.

Aloha and a welcome to a few more classmates added to the email blog list.

Hi, All…..Sounds like you all in Calif. attending the reunion will have a great time!
Seda, seems like you’re doing a lot to help and yes, the 7 layer jello will be a perfect summer dessert
and also the ono haupia by Jane.
So jealous….just know that you’ll all have a great time and how gracious of Clifford to offer his home
for this event.
On another note, I just asked Gerri about Tom’s condition.
I hope and pray that he is getting better and I am sure that he knows he has many friends and classmates
also concerned and praying for him.
October will soon be here and will be so nice to see everyone again.

I did respond to Vernon Wong regarding Tom Okuhara.
Forgot to cc you.
I spoke to Tom after receiving Vern's email.
He has retired from Oahu Restaurant Supply and being a couch potato (ha! ha!)
His knees are still bothering him even after the surgeries a while back.
Having hard time getting around.
His computer not set up yet and will contact Vern when it is.
He still sounds like his jovial self and wants to join us in Vegas but will not be able to do so due to his condition.
He gives all his Aloha.

Hal,
Just wanted to post some information about up coming Southern Calif. Reunion on Oct. 2nd,
at Clifford Ching's Beach house in Oxnard.
A group of us, met at Clifford's beautiful beach house on Thursday the August 5th.
The house is very spacious and is right on the beach, a volley ball net is just outside.
We all agreed that their house will hold 30 or more people comfortably.
Parking is available in front of Clifford's house, at his neighbor's house and down two short
blocks away.
We have set the time for 11:00am to start.
Bea Abe is in charge of a fun "ice breaker" and their will be music and great story telling.
Kim Ching's kitchen is spacious and there is a barbeque outside if we need it.

Jane wants to encourage everyone to car pool down and if you would like to carpool,
contact her.

We are encouraging everyone, to come with their musical instruments and talents.
Hawaiian Cd's will get us into party mood, also would like to encourage people to come
in Hawaiian attire.

There is a very nice motel about 3 miles from the Ching's.
It is called Casa Via Mar Inn at 377 W. Channel Islands Blvd. Port Hueneme:
(8050 984-6222 or 1 (800) 992-5522.
Their website is www.casaviamar.com.
They list a king bed at a AAA or AARP rate at $77/night.

Clifford has provide this directions to his house.
His address is **** Ocean Dr. Oxnard, Ca. 101 freeway north.
( email me - halinhi@****, or contact Jane Mock Pang - for full address )
Get off at Victoria Ave.
Turn left.
Go all the way down Victoria Ave. (6.7 miles - past Fisherman's Village at Channel Island Blvd. )
to San Nicolas at Roosevelt.
Turn right on San Nicolas toward ocean.
Turn left on Ocean Dr.
Go about 1 mile to **** Ocean Drive on the right.
We're a 2 story off-white stucco with blue tile trim.
We'll tell you where to park when you get there.

Now for the most important thing, the food!
We are having a pot luck, so we would like to have your favorite Hawaii dish.
We need about 3 entrees, 3 side dishes ( which could be a salad of some sort, like somen salad)
3 or 4 desserts.
Oh yes, some pupus would be nice.
If you are unable to cook you may bring paper goods or refreshments.
I will make potato salad and would like some one else to make a batch also.
I am going to bring the 7 layer jello, because I heard that in Hawaii, it is not a party unless you
have 7 layer jello.
I will bring some Korean Barbeque.
Jane Mock is bringing chow mein, mochi chicken and Haupia.
Kim will make a dessert.

You can contact Jane Mock, Seda, Clifford Ching or just respond on this blog.

We encourage everyone to join us if you can, we are planning a great day.
See you all soon.

I remember that you mentioned seeing Tom Okuhara and that he wasn´t in very good health.
Have you ever seen him since, and do you perhaps know how he is faring nowadays?
You may recall I told that I got to know "Oku" very well when we were stationed in Okinawa
at the same time in 1963-64.
He was in the USAF at Naha Air Base; I was with Naval Air Facility, Naha.

I'm going to assume that responses to the Bulldog Bulletin headcount form are
still being accepted if I'm reading Pearl's email correctly.
That being the case, send in your response if you haven't yet done so.
This I'm guessing includes not only the luncheon, but also any possible shows
and the slot tournament.

A correction to the Bulldog Bulletin on the location of the slot tournament...
it will be held at the Main Street Station Casino, not at the California Hotel and Casino.

Las Vegas has a new bus and route transit system, besides the regular buses
and the double-deckers, which went into service this past March called the
Ace Gold Line... or now simply known as the Gold Line.
It's an articulated bus transiting partly across dedicated lanes and existing traffic
lanes between Downtown and the South end of the Strip with many stops in
between (Convention Center, Fashion Show Mall, Bellagio, Mandalay, etc.)
Fares, which just went up this past Monday (8/2/10), are $5 for 2hrs of unlimited
rides... $7 for 24hrs of unlimited rides... and other additional extended plans.
Seniors (us guys, 65+) are 1/2 price for the 2hr if you obtain a (free) discount pass
at the Downtown Transit Center.
There are easy to use ticket dispensing machines at each stop.
The system operates 24/7 with frequency varying with the amount of ridership...
approximately 12 - 14 minutes of wait at each stop during peak hours.
The buses are very comfortable and entry is on an honor system through 3 doors
at each stop... which makes for fast boarding and exit... sort of like a subway or
train system... which, by the way, the buses kind of resemble.
Probably the best (only ?) bargain (round trip) I got for $2.50 in LV.
Thought I'd try it out and pass this info along for your possible use in October.

Thanks Arlene, I've passed on and notified the committee and Pearl of your request... ditto Gerri and Elsie.

Gerri, I nearly forgot... how can yeah... besides Karen's ever-smiling/laughing face and bubbly personality...
there was that booming voice... she really didn't know me but remembered me from the KHS '61 reunions
I attended with my wife... from nearly across the room, ' EH, YOU ! the camera guy, come take our pictcha '

Elsie, question... will you still be posting the same items / catalogs on the Pbase website ?
I'll remove whatever that aren't relevant any more... same for Carl, Jean and Seda.
I understand you and some of the others are possibly doing a craft fair again in LV.
Let me know if you need to add in / adjust those catalogs... same again for Carl, Jean, Seda and others.

Much as he fit in otherwise with the team and fans... guess we all could see this coming :

Aloha Harold.

Please pass on to the Reunion attendance committee that Jack and I will now be able to attend the planned luncheon on Oct. 10.

Have been quite busy taking my 92 year Mom to Physical Therapy, work etc. but I have checked in on your enjoyable emails.

Read Vernon Wong's memories on Karen Kim.
It is amazing how paths do cross in our lives.
While working at the Royal Hawaiian i ran across Karen from time to time.
Actually attending meetings at Princess Kaiulani although I never met this restaurant hostess before,
in speaking with her I felt I knew her somehow.
Guess what, she was Karen's mom, same attention getting voice, personality and an older version of Karen.
Then when attending a St. Augustine volleyball tournament that my daughter participated in,
this young girl participating caught my attention and I mentioned to Kim, my daughter,
that I know this girl somehow, guess what, same voice, assertive personality....
it was Karen's daughter, so ironic, and the light bulb went off when I found out that her mom was named Karen.
Karen also worked as a banquet worker at the many Sheraton Waikiki functions and meetings that I attended,
still the same smiling one.
Occasionally saw her after she left SW, remarried and moved to the Big Island where I understand that her Mom lived.
Then about 4 or 5 years ago, I saw Karen at Longs Kahala Mall, she was with someone and said that she did not remember me
since she had had several small strokes.
Karen still looked good, pretty face, bubbly, our thoughts and prayers go out to Karen's family and friend.

Vernon, Bing, if you have a change of schedule, let us know... sooner than later... may be possible that the
committee can squeeze you in and accept payment at the door again.

I've reposted the 6/18/10 condensed version of the Bulldog newsletter for convenience below.
Notes and additional info have been added in.

Comments, concerns and especially suggestions are certainly welcome for events for the days that we all

Notice from the reunion committee :

Due to requests for photos from the Honolulu class reunion in April, 2010, Chester Otani has produced a DVD slideshow
incorporating photos from several sources.
The reunion committee has decided to make this DVD slideshow available to all classmates.

The DVD slideshow includes photos from:
Golf outing at Waikele Golf Course; Around the island bus tour with Milton Napuunoa; Class reunion at Pearl Country Club;
Mini reunion at Kincaids restaurant; and Mini reunion for Sandy Ishimoto Yamada held at Maunalani Heights Nursing Home.

The DVD slideshow includes photos from four classmates: Roy Okano, Hal Oshiro, Carl Yasuda and Chester Otani.
Additional photos are included from Photoworks Hawaii (the professional photographer at the reunion) and Jalna Amoy
(who shot photos for Betty Townsend, one of our classmates, who couldn't make the reunion).
