This story (published in 1930) begins with Jan recuperating in a Los Angeles house.

Many of the observations of Los Angeles life still resonate today (I visited in April 2012).

In "Chaplin: The Mirror of Opinion", David Robinson writes that Jan and Cora Gordon " .. were shrewder prophets and commentators on the fickle character of the American public."
