California Wildflowers

California has Mediterranean climate which means a few dozen miles from the ocean the weather is desert like. Every year in the spring, there is a short blossom of desert wildflowers. Not all years are created equal because the peak intensity hinges upon many factors such as the timing and quantity of precipitation, the temperature pattern and the density of dormant seeds from the past years. 2008 was a pretty incredible year for wildflower sight-seeing. The 2009 season was just average.

If you are planning a field trip, the most up-to-the-date flower information can be found at these two websites:
Carol Leigh's California Wildflower Hotsheet and Desert USA.
