Kluane Lake

We left Haines very reluctantly. Surely we won't find a more beautiful place than Haines anywhere in Alaska. We did have to move on and drove back into the Yukon and over the Haines Highway. We saw a grizzly and her cub on the way and two black bears. Our camping spot for the night was near Destruction Bay on the shores of Kluane Lake, an incredible lakefront site with no other campers in sight. The owners of the campground told us that they made regular grizzly patrols so we shouldn't worry. Right.

It was very beautiful and Breland relaxed for a bit. We have a long drive tomorrow over what is supposed to be the worst roads we'll encounter.

Gayle, forgive me for this long comment, but this shot awakens many memories. Years ago I ran away to Alaska. I drove from Buffalo to Chicago, sold my car in Chicago and took a bus to Prince Rupert, BC then the ferry to Haines and hitch hiked from Haines to Anchorage. I eventually spent five years living in Alaska; two in Barrow and three in Kotzebue.

On the trip from Haines to Anchorage around Kluane Lake while traveling down the road adjacent to the lake a large shadow fell over the van in which I was riding. The shadow grew into a huge dark object and it was quickly evident that an airplane was low enough over our vehicle to appear to be landing on our roof. It did not; it missed us and landed in front of us on the road. It taxied forward and stopped, as did we. The pilot exited the plane, walked back to our car and asked "can you guys help me push this off the side of the road?" We could and did. He had run out of gas and saw us traveling on the road and knew we were his ticket to the nearest gas station. It was the day before Thanksgiving and cold and snowing. There was very little traffic. For me, it was exciting and just a hint of the adventures that were to come during my years in the great state of Alaska.

Your photographs are wonderful. Thanks for the memories.

Hey Breland, the last time I saw you in that position, you were in your office at work.
Take care and have a great time.

This kind of solitude and beauty is what RV camping is all about but so hard to find such places in the lower 48. I can tell Bre doesn't really want to move. :))
Best to you,
Dick:)

I imagine Brelands wondering why it took so long to do this, but they say good things come to those who wait....it's a place worth surveying !!
