17-Lahaina Marina

Pioneer Inn on the right. Next to it you see the (more or less) historic Brig Carthaginian II.

Carthaginian was made 1920 by the Krupp Shipyard in Kiel, Germany and sailed under the
name "Mary." Later she was sold to a Swedish company and became a new name "Komet."
This ship was used to charter cement across the Baltic Sea, not a very romantic affair.

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation has researched a suitable ship for its waterfront
exhibition and purchased her 1972 in Danmark. From there Carthaginian was brought to
Lahaina in a 105 days voyage. The original rig was a schooner, which was replaced by a
Brig rig in the period of 1978-1980. The rigging plan base on the English brig "Marie Sophie",
ca. 1870. The Royal Yard was raised on April 26, 1980 in Lahaina. The ship is ever since one
of the main attractions in the Lahaina Marina but her historic value is being questioned.
