Newspaper Rock, Utah

along state highway 211, on the sprint towards Canyonlands NP, Needles district, the road passes by Newspaper Rock..here artists, over the last 2,000 years, have carved petroglyphs by etching into the 'desert varnish', a dark manganese/iron layer added to local rock by rain and bacteria...the pictures seem to be mainly of shaman-like figures, and hunting targets, with a few more conceptual images here and there

I love seeing this art. It feels like it should be protected in case it is really old.
That is a strange hairstyle in the middle.

A fascinating sight. I am sure these petroglyphs mean more than we can make out, perhaps there is some shamanistic meaning. For example the figure at the center with the "tentacles" and "hair" on the legs was surely not depicted like this on a lark. A well shot documentary photo David, it is most interesting to see this.
