Hairy Cicada, Tettigarcta tomentosa

Cradle Valley, Tasmania, Australia

This is the only photo I have ever seen of a live specimen of this "prinitive" species.
I went out looking for moths to photograph and when I saw it sitting on a log at the
edge of a rainforest I thought it was a big moth. But no, it is the rarely seen Hairy Cicada-
and this species is only found in Tasmania. It really is very hairy, and its eyes are very
close together. Like quite a few other Tasmanians I have met.
