Hatching Common Sandpiper Chicks

Trawsfynydd Lake

Note the "egg tooth" like a claw in the hatching egg, also just about visible breaking through in the egg immedietly above.

Bad news I'm afraid, I was greeted by a very distressed pair of Sandpipers this evening and when I checked the nest it was empty. I guess that a stoat or a weasel or maybe a cat had them. Shame, it was a real privilege to see them start to hatch yesterday and I was looking forward to following their progress - still that's what nature's all about, always marvellous and always cruel.

I wouldn't necessarily fear the worst Keith, this is one species that does move the newly hatched chicks to a safer place once they hatch..
