West Bank - Luxor

I wanted to show you the Pit. It is hard to get the relativity right at ground level. The doorway to your right may help. This is a very serious Pit. It was full to the brim with rubbish and debris and when excavated to the bottom revealed a priceless hoard of domestic goods and throwaways. No great shakes to walk down, jump the fence and do it. No time, we have to walk back and begin the climb.

The origin of the pit should be mentioned here. It is not a geological anomaly, it was dug up in search for water. We have 2 Ramesside documents recording the successive attempts to dig to the water level. The first document dates to year 15 of Ramesses III. A depth of 22.4 metres was reached without finding water and the project was stopped. The second document dates most probably to the reign of Ramesses VI . The workmen tried to find the water supply again. This time, a professional surveyor was brought in to calculate the remaining distance to the water table. The total depth of the water table was established to be over 31.5 metres. The water level was never reached, the project was abandoned and the pit was filled with .... well, treasures.
