4-Day Hike on the Inca Trail

During the Inca Empire, extensive road systems were developed to connect the vast ranging empire - about 25k-30k kilometers in distance. Hanging bridges made of vegetable fiber spanned rivers, and steep slopes were surmounted with steps and ramps.

The famous Inca Trail, linking Match Picchu with the Sacred Valley, is the best persevered of all. The 24 miles (39 km) trail covers diverse landscapes and passes more than 30 Inca sites. Broken up into sections and designated camp sites heavily regulated by the government, the trail takes 4 days to complete.

Unlike most other groups that finish the hike at sunrise at the Sun Gate, we purposely slowed down on the 3rd day so we could have the trail and sites to ourselves, including the 3rd night camping above the cloud forest, waking up to sunrise on one side of the mountain range and full moon setting on the opposite side. We shared a bottle of champaign upon arrival at the Sun Gate at sunset, having the view of Machu Picchu all to ourselves.

Thanks to our wonderful 12 porters and 2 guides accompanying us on this expedition. They made this experience even more special than we could imagined.
